Welcome
30 October – 1 November 2010
Hanoi, Vietnam
Honey is a wonderful product, used both as a sweetener and a medicine throughout the world. It also provides an important source of income to both small-scale farmers and commercial beekeepers. The bees that produce honey pollinate diverse fruits and vegetables and contribute to agroecosystems through out the world. Many issues currently affect the production and trade of honey, ranging from conservation of the bees that produce honey to diseases that affect bees, contaminants in honey, and import regulations.
Referring to the permissions of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development and Apimondia, the Vietnam Bee Research and Development Center and Vietnamese Beekeepers’ Association invite you to participate in the conference to explore a wide range of topics related to the development of beekeeping activities and marketing of honey. Five internationally recognized experts in their field will provide overviews of major topics. Those who have confirmed their participation include Dr. Nicola Bradbear, Director of Bees for Development, with a critical review of beekeeping development practices worldwide, Dr. Ingemar Fries, Professor in apiculture and honey bee pathology, will discuss honey bee pathogens and pathogen control, Mr. Jenne de Beer expert on Non-timber forest products will talk about production and marketing of ‘green’ and forest honey, Dr. Cord Lüllmann, Director of Quality Services International GmbH, Bremen, Germany, will give a comprehensive look on the legal regulations in force – especially for residue control – and the main criteria influencing the honey quality, Mr. Hans Boedeker, Handler/Importer of The National Honey Board, with presentation of The honey market in The USA, and Mr. Ronald P. Phipps president of CPNA International, USA, will present about honey and honey marketing in the 21st Century. The last day of the conference will be an excursion to visit local beekeepers.
This conference will provide valuable insights and viewpoints to people working in international development, local and international NGOs, honey traders, personnel working for import and export companies, and people involved in quality control of honey.
Vietnam has become a leading tourist destination in Asia because of traditional landscapes, reasonable costs of food and accommodation and interesting handicrafts. In Hanoi, in addition to vibrant and diverse shopping opportunities, the water puppet shows and ancient Temple of Literature are popular. Many local tour companies can arrange short trips to sites outside of Hanoi such as the World Heritage site of Halong Bay and spectacular mountainous areas in the northwest, home of many ethnic minority people.
Please join us for a unique perspective on honey and beekeeping!
